Term 2 Week 5

Room 21’s Week 5 Wrap Up

This week’s Science experiment was a continuation of last week’s rocket.  We made volcanoes, essentially using the same chemical reaction we created in the rocket.  It was a fun, hands-on experiment, where, in groups, we moulded our own volcanoes using flour, salt, cooking oil and water.  We then moulded the mixture around an empty plastic bottle in the shape of a volcano.  We loved this because we got soooo messy!   Carefully we filled the bottle, almost to the top, with warm water and added a few drops of red food colouring (for the lava).  Then just a few drops of liquid detergent went in before the baking soda.  Slowly, we poured in the vinegar and watched as our volcano erupted.  What an awesome sight and one that brought many cheers and roars of excitement and laughter!  We enjoyed this experiment, not only as visually it was exciting, but it helped to reinforce our learning of chemical reactions, the making and destroying of bonds between atoms in which CO2 is made and how that gas builds up to force the liquid ‘lava’ up and over the mouth of our volcano.

Thanks also to Sunwoo for bringing in his home-made rocket!  It was neat to see you explain how it works and then to watch it launch in the sky so high - A W E S O M E!!

In Reading this week, the Jellybeans are trying their hand at being CSI’s in reading ‘Crime Night’.  It is an exciting book, with twists and turns that keep us on our toes trying to solve the mystery.  The Fruit Bursts continue to read Leonardo da Vinci’s Super-Brain, finding out interesting facts about his incredible life.  From the work in their reading books, I can tell their poster presentation will be high quality!  The Kit-Kats are enjoying an old classic; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S Lewis, a book that paints wonderful images in our head with its words.  The Marshmallows continue to develop their understanding of narratives, having just finished ‘Splinters’ and beginning ‘The Robber’s Mask’.

Until next week,

Keep cool til after school
