Term 2 Week 9

Room 21’s Week 9 Wrap Up

This week in Science we focused on how asked the question, ‘how does exercise affect our heart rate?’  Did you know your heart beats about 100,000 times in one day and about 35 million times in a year.  During your life it will beat more than 2.5 billion times!  Wow.

So, do you want to check if yours is still going?  We did and so using the 2nd and 3rd finger on our hand, we placed them in the groove in our wrist that lies under our thumb.  We also checked our pulse on our neck, alongside the outer edge of our windpipe.  Both times, we could feel a throbbing sensation, which was, of course, our pulse.  It throbs as the blood moves through our arteries.  We counted the number of throbs we could feel in 15 seconds, then, multiplied that number by 4 to find out our heart rate in beats per minute, (bpm).  This was our resting heart rate.

We then did 10 star jumps and checked our pulse to see that it had risen just slightly.  What would happen to it when we ran around the field?  What if we sprinted 100m?  Our heart rate increased, of course.  This is because when we exercise, our muscles need more oxygen.  Your heart must pump more blood through your lungs, and then pump it out to your muscles.  Your heart beats faster and faster, to pump more blood.  We noticed when we stopped and rested, our heart rate slowed down, as our body caught up with its supply of oxygen.  Interesting hey?  We thought so.

FIFA World Cup fever continues to reign in our classroom and it’s fabulous to hear the banter between everyone and their sweepstake country and their country of origin.  We were very proud of the All Whites scoring a goal in the World Cup and drawing with Slovakia on Tuesday night.

How did you get on with last week’s online wordle?  The answer was Moth balls (when you cry lots, we often say you’re ‘balling’).  Tricky huh?  So how about another one for this week...
