Producing MVTV

A lot of people email me and ask how we produce the MVTV show so we have put together these pages to help explain how we do this.

You, are of course, most welcome to come and visit us on a Wednesday morning to watch us putting a show together then going LIVE at 8:55 to the entire school

We use 2 major software packages, Visual Communicator 3 and Pinnacle Liquid 6,  and Tricaster to produce our show 3 times a week.

We have been producing MVTV now for over 4 years and during that time we have continued growing from strength to strength.

We started off with a video camera, a VHS video recorder and a 26” colour TV. We used PowerPoint as a script prompter and lots of enthusiastic children.

We taped every segment and edited them together producing a tape about every 2 weeks that was shown to those classes who were “interested” As the programme grew we got more sophisticated equipment thus improving the quality and quantity of the programme

The next big leap was 2and a half years ago when we finally finished getting TV’s in all of the classrooms.

With the help of several parents and the caretaker we managed to lay coaxial tv cable throughout the school. The caretaker and I made all the TV shelves and installed them into the classrooms.

This meant that we could start producing our show live for the first time. The first script for the live show was half an A4 page at 12 point and lasted less than 5 minutes and we thought it was great….. now,  4 and a half years on, our script is lucky to stay on 2 full A4 pages and the show is “LIVE” for 15 minutes on average

A lot of time money and effort have gone in to producing the show as we know it today and we are always striving to lift the standard and quality of the show…..

We have had many famous celebrities as guests on our show including Helen Clarke, John Key, The Minister Of Education, Mike McRoberts, and lots more. We have recently featured on the TV3 Breakfast Show in Term 2.

We have visitors from different schools throughout New Zealand and recently were hosts to 31 teachers from Australia.

We have a studio audience for each show and a set of guests from that class who help us produce the show. They usually do the Introduction, the Where in the World is MVTV and one of them is a Guest Anchor for the entire show. Their class and their teacher stay in the studio and watch the show LIVE from behind the scenes.
We have moved the sound desk to the other room as its essential that we have a quiet place to monitor the sound abd adjust accordingly. The rest of the equipment is in the room so the children from the studio audience can see how the show is made. We feel its important that they see how its put together and use it as a teaching opportunity as well.
The TV monitors above the Crew are for viewing what each camera is seeing - this is so the presenter can position themselves ready to go live for their segment.

We use several different pieces of equipment and different types of software so that as many children as possible are involved in each shows production.
